LICENSES

By David Willems

When I attempted to exchange my out-of-state driver's license for one in-of-state at the DMV, the woman behind the counter informed me that she would need to keep my out-of-state license and that I would have to wait for my in-of-state license in the mail.

"And how long will the new license take to arrive?" I asked.

"About three weeks," she responded.

"And what about my drinking problem? How am I supposed to get into bars for three weeks?" I asked.

She just stared at me, blank.

"I suppose people make that kind of comment all the time, eh?" I suddenly realized.

She nodded.

"And it just isn't funny, is it?" I concluded.

She nodded again.

"Have a nice day," I tried to remedy.

She stared, blankly.

And I left.
