HOW TO MAKE NEW YORK GIRLS REALIZE THEY WOULD RATHER BE WITH ADAM WADE

INSTALLMENT #7 – THE MENTOR

I've been in NYC for 6 years now, and I've met a lot of nice people.  But there are very few people who have taken me under their wing. These 'MENTORS' will always be close to my heart for taking the time to show me right from wrong, and passing down valuable knowledge. So after 6 years you’d figure it was time... for me to become a ‘MENTOR’ to someone.  The new receptionist, at the TV show I’m a production assistant for was incredibly beautiful. And not just on the outside. She was smart, funny and real!  Most of all... she really seemed to enjoy talking to me.  The indescribable pleasure it was to walk in every day to work and see her smile and say, ”Hello, Adam.” From her first day, we immediately hit it off. I was astonished that she was genuinely interested in my experiences being a production assistant.  Soon it became clear...I had become THIS GIRL'S MENTOR!

She'd ask me all kinds of questions and I loved every second of it. She’d hang on to my every word.  I guess I became sort of her big brother (of the TV biz), and I was cool with that, I just liked being around her.  She made me feel important. Best of all, I was going to help her get a better job in TV... using my POWERFUL connections.  If I could be a part of getting her a good job... WOW! That would make me a great mentor.

I made a few calls, sent a bunch of emails and helped her with her resume.  A few weeks passed and… BAM!  She got a call back for an interview.  I think I was more excited than she was. I was happy because I was helping someone out who deserved it.  Just a nice person. The morning before the interview I called her (it was a Sunday), to wish her luck... and she informed me that she just took a different job (a job on one of the best comedy shows on TV), and that she would have to cancel the interview I helped get her.  She was so polite and thankful to me for trying to help.  I literally froze with the phone in my hand, because even though I was extremely happy for her, I quickly realized that...I was now no longer her mentor.

I got off the phone and headed to work (I work 7 days a week as a TV production assistant). I put on my headphones and on Oldies 101.1 FM Peter, Paul and Mary’s ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’ was playing. My eyes got watery. It was over. Sure we'd talk/email each other in the future, but it’d be different. Now we'd be swapping stories back and forth, we were on the same level. Okay, who am I kidding?  She was now a few steps above me. I still can’t help thinking about the first time I met her, I introduced myself, said something about her name and she laughed. Then I looked at her and said, "Promise me someday when you're an Executive Producer of a hit show, you'll hire me."

She smiled and blushed. “Of course, Adam.”

She didn't know how serious I was.
